Tomàs Martínez Suñol

Tomàs Martínez Suñol was born in 1964 in France, Dieulefit, a little town where his family moved from Catalunia to escape the political situation of that period. He spent most of his childhood in Provence, but when he returned to his native town, Badalona, he regained his land and identity. He succeeded in this process through the intimate observation of the narrow streets of the town, bounded by houses which, even if sometimes can only be guessed, generate the curves and unexpected lights which perfectly describe the place. Tomàs Suñol's painting lies within a fascinating balance between abstraction and reality, where details lead beyond the limits of visible. Shadow and colour create compositions where expressive power and poetry confront in a perfectly balanced way. Colours are created by light rather than on the palette, it is still light that, denying chromatic changes, defines spaces. Surfaces are interrupted, cut by only perceivable lines and dark slits, which tell about a subject made up of houses placed one against the other, shady or sunny roads, unseen but still present humanity.

Tomàs Martinez Suñol. The places of colours.

An ochre line in the foreground. A grey-white one on the top, thinner than the first one. A blue mottled area. The framework is scanned by a series of faint lines, filaments of material, slightly sculpted by light shadings which suggest volumes.

Some artists cannot bear definitions, among whom Tomas Suñol is certainly included. What do his tactile and rough oil paintings describe? His brightly coloured patterns, which seem dusty and sandy, as if the sun after passing through did not hit them anymore? Landscape glimpses, as someone calls them. Actually, that is what they are: the perspective flight of a building can be perceived, as well as the opening of doors or windows. His personal and artistic path suggest that those streets belong to Badalona, his parents' native city in Catalonia, where Thomas could not be born, since his family was forced to move to France due to political reasons. The return to Badalona – the city where he is living nowadays, as if he wanted to challenge his own destiny – corresponded with the need of painting its places, in order to fix them forever. Since being the son and nephew of painters, he has painting in his blood. Nonetheless, these paintings are not notes used to impress those landscapes within his memory.

They are the pictorial tradition of his pure emotion. As if the artist had sat on a little wooden chair, in front of one of those houses, among thousands of alleys which vanish one into the other, fixing that view for so long to forever impress it within his retina, thus losing the real features of the surroundings and turning them into flashes of colour. As if he had then raised, locked in his studio, closed his eyes and started painting his memories. Colours brighten the canvas, although sometimes being disconnected from the shapes. They pulse, living of their own. They are colours, as well as voices, sounds, scents. Their lumpy, dense, intense and tactile substance makes them even more alive and autonomous compared to their story, the title placed beside them. The colours by Suñol are the free jolt of abstraction within a bare and sober representation which directly reaches one's soul. This is the reason why the artist cannot stand labels. Figurative abstraction? Abstract representation? Emotional depiction? It is not important. What matters is that by observing these rectangles composed by light and colour, the inner voice of the artist can be perceived. And it suffices.

Tomàs Martínez Suñol's biography is the key of interpretation to his works. Since his birth, in 1964 in Dieulefit, a little town of the Alps in the Drome district, he identified himself as an exiled, since his family moved to France from Spain, to escape Catalunia's political situation. It is easy to understand how deep the relation with one's home country can be, furthermore when it must be abandoned. And how this can influence a child whose family's memories and speeches keep homesickness and the desire for return alive. The need for regaining original identity, space, colours and light urge Tomàs Martínez Suñol to go back to Badalona, the Catalan city from which his family came from, to reborn as a "man of his land".

Observing his works, it is unavoidable to consider his family's roots and his personal history. His painting is so moving and poetic that the represented houses and roads lose their real connotation, being transfigured through the emotion of who loves and lives them beyond their own shape. Thus allowing abstraction –or more precisely- a figurative abstraction. It is very interesting to discover the two dimensions within Tomàs Martínez Suñol works –the abstract and the figurative-. At the beginning, it is necessary to free one's mind from any desire of looking for the recognizable subject, tasting the pureness of abstraction characterized by chromatic and luminous modulations, rhythms, emotional evocations. Then –through an amazing shift- let light guide the experience, thus recognizing the places which will show their true and deep essence, presenting figures and images which lied within the artist's mind and were hidden between shadows and lights by his creative ability.
