Jacqueline Dengler

In Jacqueline Dengler's paintings, matter, light and colour merge into an intense dialogue. The need for truth manifests itself through the research and revision of surfaces, kneaded and handled like clay, leaving original and unique traces which represent her. The surface is carved, deeply injured, to connect it with its inner side; the soul emerging from this process gives meaning and sense to her works.

She was born in 1944 in Freurier, Switzerland. She graduated as a teacher and then began to attend ceramic courses in Germany, French and Switzerland. In 1973, she opened her own atelier, carried on for 25 years. In 2000, Dengler embraced painting, experimenting different techniques, combining tar, acrylic, soil and pigments. She realized many solo and group exhibitions. She lives and works in Choëx s/Monthey, Switzerland.

Daniela Croci Silvuni

Earth, Water and Fire are considered by Jacqueline Dengler as natural archetypes and fundamental matter of investigation and expression. Her artistic path started in 1973, when she opened a laboratory of pottery, carried on for 25 years. What she likes the most is to plunge her hands into the matter, which assumes various forms according to the artist's feelings and wills. She likes this ancient work, the idea of identifying with the moulded matter. Then the fire – key element to create ceramics – which fixes permanently the gestures, the signs and transforms the sense of experience into an unalterable condition. Earth, Water, Fire and... Light, which grazes the ceramics making them soft and shaded, hard and sharp, vivid. At this point, Jacqueline Dengler needed to shape Light too. The change from ceramics to painting is expressed through pieces of art where matter, light and colour merge, creating a gratifying and perfecy dialogue. In 2000, Dengler embraced painting, experimenting different techniques, combining tar, acrylic, soil and pigments.

Through her works, the artist investigates the relationship between painted area and canvas, visible and invisible, that is to say appearing and existing. The need for truth manifests itself through the research and revision of surfaces, kneaded and handled like clay, leaving original and unique traces which represent her. The surface is carved, deeply injured, to connect it with its inner side; the soul emerging from this process gives meaning and sense to her works. Matter is enriched, no more simple material upon a support, but hot, sensitive and living skin. The signs upon it are like slits, wrinkles telling about history, life and humanity.

Crowds or individuals enter the works, pass and fade away. Dematerializing into the light or plunging into a deep red which crumble matter turning it into soul. When they seem to disappear, they gain new vital consistency. It is a present and beating power, able to break the chains and give back freedom, showing hidden truth. Someone enters the space and faces the blinding light which disrupts mass and certainties, someone else is plunged into a fire-red which melts and reshapes. It is a humanity struggling to give voice to its inner side. An exodus, a voyage towards an unknown place. As mysterious as the empty chairs painted by Jacqueline Dengler, disturbing presences, symbols of enigmatic waitings, places to reach or to leave.
