Mario Branca

Foto Mario Branca The true meaning of Mario Branca's sculpture is his ability of creating perceptual short circuits, perfectly balancing among dream, reality, truth and artificiality. Since the beginning, he focused upon metal work, directly forging his pieces of art. He chooses copper since his father – a blacksmith – taught him its charm, the beauty of its shimmering colours, its delicacy. He is able to gift metal with precious mimetic tricks, chromatic wizardries, which render almost woody and vegetable oxidized green, until one moment before complete illusion

Mario Branca born in Milan in 1977. He graduated in sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts of Brera in 2001. His public works can be visited in Settimo Milanese, Vighignolo (Milan), Casalmaiocco (Sondrio), San Donato Milanese, Santa Margherita Ligure, Piacenza, Rho (Milan). He lives and works in Piacenza.

Alessandra Redaelli

Mario branca. Tamed Nature.

The curved, oblong, smugly raised from the ground shape and the long paws undoubtedly belong to a spider. Huge, dreadful and fascinating at the same time. Like the threatening Maman by Louise Bourgeois. Moreover, the bent paws seem to be moving towards us. In the end, while approaching it, this sensation weakens, until it is recognized as a seed. An exotic, giant seed with long and strong roots.

This is the true meaning of Mario Branca's sculpture. His ability of creating perceptual short circuits. Perfectly balancing among dream, reality, truth and artificiality. He chooses copper since his father – a blacksmith – taught him its charm, the beauty of its shimmering colours, its delicacy. Moreover, it allows him to create light sculptures or, as he calls them, “anti-monuments”. He is able to gift metal with precious mimetic tricks, chromatic wizardries, which render almost woody and vegetable oxidized green, until one moment before complete illusion. Glance is frozen, seduced, puzzled. It wonders how those realistic and beating leaves, whose grains can be followed as a path, whose contour is almost tactile, can be at the same time as sharp as blades. Why a plant with golden foliage and a pulpy bulb has fierce quills upon its flowers, as a medieval weapon.

The confusion augments when it becomes clear that the wild game of the woven tendrils and the random leaves' germination are ruled by a superior order. An energy which controls the innate chaos of Nature, appeasing it through a perfect symmetry. For this reason, the sunflowers are lined up as a small squad of soldiers, the leeks – whose surface is pulpy and lively – become sentinels of an imaginary gate, whereas the lacustrine plants stand out against the sky, perfectly equidistant and plunged into invisible water.
